How to successfully wild camp?

Wild camping is a unique experience that we must try at least once in our lives! For this reason, here are some important tips to consider for successful wild camping.

Where to settle?

Wild camping isn’t allowed everywhere or in every country. It’s important to first find out about the country you plan to camp in and its regulations. Here, we’ve listed all the European countries and their laws on wild camping and bivouacking .

When choosing where to pitch your tent, it’s important to consider the wind. The chosen spot should be sheltered from the wind, allowing for quiet camping and avoiding chilly nights.

It is also advisable to avoid hollow areas and choose a location not too far from a watercourse.

When camping in a forest, take the time to look around the area to make sure there are no signs of wildlife.

As for the mountains, it is advisable to camp between the summit and the bottom. At lower altitudes, it is very cold, while higher up it is very windy.

Places to avoid

Caution! You should avoid pitching your tent in a work area, even if the construction site doesn’t appear to be in operation. Furthermore, flood-prone areas, such as riverbeds and tidal beaches, are not recommended. Moreover, in France, it is illegal to camp and/or bivouac within 250 meters of a body of water.

You should also be careful not to be on private land at the risk of upsetting the owner, or remember to ask their permission beforehand.

To camp safely, it is best to identify areas where mines or animal traps, or military zones, are always likely to be found.

Finally, in France, as in many European countries, you must ensure that you are not in a protected area, such as a natural park. Camping in these areas is often prohibited, and only bivouacking is permitted in designated areas.

How to Make a Campfire Safely

When camping in the wild, there’s nothing better than cooking your meat or warming up around a campfire! So, how can you safely build a campfire?

First of all, it’s important to check current permits, as campfires may be prohibited at certain times of the year and in certain regions. While campfires are prohibited, you may find places where stone barbecues are freely accessible.

To make your campfire, you must first choose its location carefully and remove some leaves and dry grass nearby that could catch fire.

Once you’ve chosen a location, you’ll need to prepare it properly. To do this, you’ll need to create a space 1.5 to 2 meters in diameter, while removing dead leaves, needles, and twigs.

Next, you need to find some good fuel to start the fire (newspaper, dry grass, dead leaves, etc.), as well as some good dry wood (dead branches, twigs, etc.) to make it last.

Note that survival experts use a magnifying glass or flints.
